The magistrates naturally looked to this society for aid in the matter, and we gladly consented to undertake the work until permanent provision should be made. Since July 14, when the law went into effect, we have harbored 393 children held under bail for trial for various offenses. Each child has been, immediately on admission, bathed and supplied with new clothing, and retained in our custody until his 'trial or until bail was secured. We have investigated every case, and have reported the facts ascertained, with recommendation as to the best action, at the meetings of the Juvenile court. Judge Martin has said that our services to the court have been 'invaluable.' While the labor attending this large increase of work has been arduous and the responsibility heavy, the experience has been of great advantage to us, in that it has given us an insight into the causes of juvenile dejinquincy that we could have gained in no other way. A detailed statement of all the cases would be of great interest, but a closer study of some of them is necessary before giving our final conclusions. But it is not too soon to assert that the parents are generally the delinquents and not the children. "On January I, 1901, we had under our care 722 children. We received during the year 307 new cases, of which 101 were committed to us by the Juvenile court. We have cared for 393 while waiting trial. The court, in addition to those committed directly to our care, returned 155 to their homes under the supervision of our probation officers.
